\nSafrole (Item No. 13894) is a natural phenylpropene that can be extracted from a variety of plants, including sassafras and nutmeg.{24226} It is a precursor in the synthesis of insecticides, fragrances, and the psychoactive drug 3,4-methylenedioxymethylamphetamine (3,4-MDMA; Item No. 13971).{25116} Isosafrole is a natural aromatic compound derived from safrole that also serves as a precursor in the synthesis of fragrances, including piperonal, and psychoactive drugs, such as 3,4-MDMA and MDA (Item No. 11554).{25116,29485,26093} Isosafrole is also an analog of stiripentol (Item No. 17781), and, like stiripentol, inhibits the conversion of pyruvate to lactate by lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) isoforms LDH1 and LDH5.{28811} It is more effective than stiripentol at reducing seizures in mice, suggesting utility in managing epileptic seizures.{28811} As a potential precursor for regulated compounds, isosafrole is scheduled as a List I chemical by the Drug Enforcement Agency.
